Beginnings

Ella and Red headed to the field today for the first official work day of the year. This is also Ella’s first time on the plow. She has really come a long way in a short time. We will plant ½ acre to garden again this year. Who knows how it will go. We have a lot to learn seeing this is our first year on this place. I thought I was figuring out the ground and weather at our old home just to start over. I guess that’s how it goes.

New babies

Joe let me get a few new chicks today. Nine to be exact and three turkeys. I'm looking forward to seeing how the turkeys will do as they will be living with the chickens. I have read that they can get sick and die from things chickens carry. Also I have all my seeds planted and under lights. My basement is looking a little full with the garden things and now a pen for the chicks. At least it's only temporary.

First ones up

This morning I had broccoli up! It only took 3 days. I bought a heat mat this year because it is cool in the basement and last year it took almost 2 weeks for things to come up. I knew the mat would help them along but I never dreamed it would bring them up that fast.
This is where Joe was working today!

First planting

Today I started getting things ready to plant my broccoli, tomatoes, peppers and onions. I should have had my onions in a few weeks ago but better late then never. I decided to make little newspaper pots last year to try to save money but this year I have so many to make I'm not sure it will be worth it.
